What is the Benefit of A Paid Consultation with a Family Law Attorney?

At ReeseLaw, P.C., we charge a consultation fee and people occasionally ask why we charge for this time, as some attorneys do it for free. However, there are important reasons for this practice that may not be apparent.

When a consultation is free, it is usually treated as a meet & greet. This takes time, and the client will still need to schedule a paid consultation to move forward with casework, or decide on representation without knowing the strategy that will be used. At ReeseLaw, we understand that family law cases are time-sensitive, and we cut to the chase; our first consultation with a client offers valuable insight and direction onto the path that is most beneficial for them.

What happens during a consultation?

When we meet with a potential client, we take the time to delve into the facts of their situation in detail. We ask questions based on our years of experience as family law practitioners. This raises important facts that help us offer a preliminary opinion about the situation. In the process, we get to know the individual and get a sense of their communication style, their goals, and the options and challenges that may lie ahead. Our clients learn about the law and about the paths available to them.

In the first consultation, we may already help clients reach a decision - whether they might decide that they are not ready to make a change to their family situation, or that they need to find out more before pursuing a particular path. All of this takes time, engagement, and skill to accomplish in one meeting.

Getting off on the right foot

In our experience, potential clients may be looking for swift results or for an outcome that will take some time to achieve. Some just want a second opinion or a case evaluation. The more information that can be provided in the beginning of this process, the more comfortable and empowered our clients feel.

Clarifying the attorney-client relationship

We assess the situation and offer legal advice during a consultation. This advice comes from years of experience, advanced study, and constant work to maintain and improve our skills. We can make meaningful assessments during the consultation, with key information which provides significant value to the person we meet. An initial consultation is covered by attorney-client privilege, which means we are bound to keep anything we learn confidential.

A consultation is a substantive meeting.  Our time and advice have value, and we hope that potential clients recognize and respect this. If you are considering a family law matter and want to have the complete attention of seasoned professionals who can help you decide what to do in a timely manner, contact us for a consultation.
